Best CB Radio under 100

Anybody who knows me will agree that I am a sucker for the classics. Thus when it came to picking a CB radio for my truck, it was a back to the basics for me. As much as I would have liked to buy one with all the top-shelf features and bells and whistles, I happened to be a little short on cash. Thus began the search for the ultimate budget CB radio. I read through online forums, product reviews on different sites and user testimonials to find the best CB radio under 100 bucks. Imagine my surprise when I found a range of low cost models that were not only attractive to look at but also packed in a range of sophisticated technical features within their classic exteriors.

Here is a list of the Best CB radio under 100

Here’s looking at five of the best CB radio models under 100 dollars that provide great value for money.

1. Uniden Bearcat 880: Surprise in a box

A friend recommended the Uniden Bearcat 880 to me. I got it installed and was bowled away by the fact that this unassuming little thing managed to pack in all the features I wanted without the unnecessary frills. It has a good sturdy build and can be surface mounted. Thus, I could borrow it from my friend’s vehicle and shift it to mine without breaking a sweat. This 40 channel radio also comes equipped with a noise cancellation mic with an extra-long cord, 7 color LED back lighting, a large display and highly legible laser etched keys.

Why do I recommend the Bearcat?

The Bearcat 880 is a great choice if you are looking for crisp clear communication without static. I would be happy to recommend it for the following great features.

  • Access to NOAA weather channel
  • High visibility keys and control panel that does not divert your attention from the road
  • Compatibility to wireless microphones
  • Surface mounting feature
  • Dynamic squelch control
  • Optional emergency channel feature

If I was to nit-pick, the cons could be summarized as the following:

  • Uniden has added a beeping sound that is audible every time you change a channel or turn the knob on the radio. The beeping sound is annoying undoubtedly but one gets used to the small hiccup after a couple of days with the radio.

My brother uses the PC787. Another great product from Uniden, it scores with its classic looks and affordability. It has a large LCD display, a back light with dimmer options, access to 40 channels, a built-in SWR meter for frequency matching, automatic noise limiters and a noise cancellation mic. I think Uniden deserves applause for managing to pack in amazing technical features at such competitive prices.

What is so great about the PC787?

For a family of radio enthusiasts, we sure love the PC787. Some of its greatest features are:

  • NOAA weather alert access
  • RF Gain adjustment for best reception
  • Variable squelch and volume control
  • Wireless microphone compatibility
  • Tone control adjustment for the best sound quality

When I first saw the PC787, I was blown over by its classic look. That it manages to pack in all the modern technological shenanigans under the hood is an added plus. Yes, it also makes that annoying beeping sound every time you turn the knob, but that’s a very small negative given the features it is providing at nearly throwaway prices.

3. AnyTone Smart CB Mobile Radio: DIY on a Sunday

I took on the AnyTone Smart CB Mobile Radio as a Sunday project. It is an international buy and thus you have to convert it to an 11 meter range product with some soldering. Once you have the channels set up, it’s all good to go. And guess what it fits my giant truck and my brother’s pigeon hole of a car as well.

What makes AnyTone a great buy?

One of the best inexpensive CB radios in the market, this one is compact, efficient and great value for money. It comes with an easy to follow tutorial with step by step instructions to convert it to a US standard 4W radio. Here is a quick look at the positive and negative points.

  • Compact in build
  • Fits both small and larger vehicles
  • Comes with FM/AM modulation
  • 11 meter conversion does not require internal modifications
  • Noise cancellation features

Now that we have got the pros covered, let us have a look at the cons.

  • Not optimally configured for the US market
  • Works in the 10 m amateur band

All said and done, this is actually a good little piece of equipment.

I have a roomy ride. Thus, I never really felt the need for a compact radion. But then I decided to give this Cobra a try. And I must concede that sometimes, great things really do come in small packages.

Why should you get a Cobra?

Another great find in the 100 dollar range, the USP of the Cobra 75 WX ST is its compactness. But that does not mean that you have to miss out on any features. It is the CB radio of the future. I cannot stop gushing about it. Just so you know, this Cobra ticks the following boxes.

  • Compact all-in one unit
  • NOAA weather alert access
  • Active channel scanning
  • Back-lit display
  • Quick and clean installation

And just because I love all things classic, here is my negative critique.

  • Owing to the compactness of the unit, the size of the display screen had to be compromised with
  • The classic exteriors of a quintessential CB radio is not available in this model

I was blown over by the compact Cobra, and then I found something even better. The Midland 1001 LWX is compact, features a flexible microphone cord with extended length, packs in high-tech features and does all this under the 70$ price level. No wonder, I am in love with this model.

Why should you be a Midlander 1001?

Believe it or not, it is just 4.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches high. Here’s looking at some of the features that the Midland 1001 LWX delivers:

  • Access to NOAA weather channels
  • Automatic noise cancellation
  • Back-lit display for easy visibility
  • Automatic noise cancellation
  • RF Gain adjustment feature for best reception
  • Public address system
  • Compatible with all microphone systems that are available in the current market
  • Can be easily installed in any vehicle

At the price that it comes in, the Midland beauty is a complete steal. And it manages to pack in features that are found in units sold at doubled prices. This is a buy that you cannot go wrong with.
